Vimanmek Mansion

Description

Vimanmek Mansion is a royal residence built in the first years of the 20st century. It is the biggest teak construction in the world. It was used only during a few years, before falling into oblivion.
However, near the end of the reign of Rama V, Queen Indharasaksaji went to live there and stayed until the death of the king. Then she left the residence, to live in another residence, more north, in Suang Hong.
Vimanmek Mansion  will afterwards be renovated several times by King Rama VI, to be used as warehouse for the Office of the Royal Family. In the 1980s, during the celebration of Bangkok's bicentenary, under the reign of actual King Rama IX, Queen Sirikit transformed it as a museum, retracing notably the dramatic reign of King Rama IV, and also exhibiting the heritage of Rama IX, his photographs and works of art, thus making it a window to national thai heritage for future generations.
Vimanmek Mansion Museum developed to include more than a dozen restored structures from the old Dusit Palace where were a collection of antique objects dating from thai prehistory and contemporary photographs given by the Royal Family.
It is actually a large complex of museums where the buildings themselves must be considered as part of this unique collection.
