BASTOGNE BARRACKS

Description

BASTOGNE BARRACKS

It is here that settled in winter 44-45, the headquarters of the "101st Airborne" and that we visit the "Cave Nuts". It is at this precise point that General McAuliffe, commander of all US troops in Bastogne, replied negatively to the request for surrender of the Germans. "Nuts" roughly means "Couillonnades" ¨Rash¨. The place is now a center of interpretation of the Second World War and a gear restoration workshop belonging to the Royal Museum of the Army.

December 16, 1944, the Germans launched their last major offensive in the west. On December 17, the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne are alerted to stop the advance of the enemy towards Bastogne and defend the main access roads to the city. Bastogne and its defenders are surrounded. Coming from the south, an armored column of the 4 th Armored Division of General Patton managed to break the German encirclement, the day after Christmas. The Battle of Bastogne will continue until January 17, 1945.
