Bertogne

Description

Bertogne (in Walloon Biertogne) is a French speaking municipality in Belgium located in the Walloon Region, the province of Luxembourg, as well as a locality where its administration headquarters is located. On 1 January 2007 the municipality, which covers 91.67 km², had 3,002 inhabitants, giving a population density of 32.7 inhabitants per km².

The commune of Bertogne has three sections, each with several localities:

  • Bertogne : Bertogne (Headquaters), Bethomont, Compogne
  • Flamierge : Flamierge, Frenet, Gives, Givroulle, Givry, Roumont-sur-Ourthe, Room, Troismont, Tronle, Wigny
  • Longchamps : Longchamps, Champs, Fays, Flamisoul, Mande-Saint-Étienne, Monaville, Rolley, Rouette, Withimont

The main villages of the municipality are Bertogne, Compogne, together formed by Longchamps, Withimont and Monaville as well as the Givry village.

The main attraction is the tourism, especially hiking pedestrian and cycling (mountain biking).

The municipality is mainly rural with a low population density.

History

On the 4th of August 2009, a two-headed calf was born in the Collard farm of Flamisoul.

In the month of December 1944, during the German offensive, Achille Choffray, a teacher at Givry and resistant since the year 1940, was shot with three young people, surprised by the German soldiers as they were trying to reach the Allied lines.
